Images

The plant photography comes from the naturalist community at iNaturalist. The site currently serves 3538 photographs by 2079 photographers, each under the Creative Commons license its author chose. Every photograph shows its author and license in the image viewer on its plant page, and in the images field of plants.json.

  • The animal icons derive from OpenMoji emoji, redrawn as single color line art. License: CC BY-SA 4.0.
  • The lotus placeholder derives from Tabler Icons. License: MIT.
  • The display font is Fredoka by Milena Brandão and Hafontia. License: SIL Open Font License 1.1.
  • The potted plant icons in the logo and on the safe plants page come from the aloe vera icon family on Magnific, used under a Freepik premium license.

Data Sources

  • ASPCA primed the first dataset and provided most of the common name and symptom data, along with the safe plants baseline.
  • iNaturalist provided the photography, licensing and attribution data.
  • Wikipedia provided the scientific classification data, the plant descriptions and the toxicity notes. This text is under CC BY-SA 4.0.
  • Wikidata provided the identifiers that connect each plant to the other databases. Wikidata data is CC0.
  • GBIF, the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, provided extra vernacular names, native ranges and the countries with the most wild observations.
  • The USDA PLANTS database provided the duration and the growth habit data. USDA data is public domain.
  • Natural Earth provided the country boundaries for the range minimaps. Natural Earth data is in the public domain.
